In Honour of Our Lady

Since it's Saturday, here's a sublime Salve Regina by Giovanni Battista Bassani (c.1657-1716) - out of liturgical season, I know, but beautiful nevertheless. The singer is the superb French alto, Gerard Lesne, whose recordings are always worth buying.

He has recorded mostly with Virgin Veritas and normally appears with his ensemble, Il Seminario Musicale. Last time I visited HMV on Oxford St there was a boxed set of 4 of his CDs for something like £15 - but I can't find it on Amazon.

But nevertheless I hope you are singing "alma redemptoris mater" in the moment!

Of course I am - but it doesn't mean we can't listen to beautiful settings of the Marian antiphons out of season!

The "Salve Regina" isn't out of season for the Cistercians and Carthusians, who sing it year 'round. So put it on and let 'er rip!
